Penellaphe who prefers to go by Poppy. She is the Maiden, protected as she is chosen by the Gods since birth. But she is held by a high standard that keeps her isolated. She has been told that she is the future of all Ascensions. That it all rests on her shoulders. Then, when a new guard enters, things change quickly, and he is soon assigned to her as her own personal guard. There is something between them, even though there shouldn't be. He is to protect her only, and she needs to prepare for her Ascension. But there are attacks that cause many to die, and the people are scared. So Poppy will do her duty.

This is the first book in the Blood and Ash World series. Poppy may have been sheltered, but she has the heart of a warrior. She will not be like her parents, unprepared and unable to protect themselves. Hawke is strong, but there is a sadness to him. His treatment of Poppy is like a slow seduction, beautiful. And yet their banter with one another is brilliantly written. The world is full of magic. The myth of vampires in this series differs from other works. I loved reading this book and can't wait to read the next book in the series, A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire.
