Loren is human, growing up in Angelthene, where all types of paranormal and supernatural creatures live. When a close friend is taken only because they couldn’t get to her, she starts to question, why her? Then, when another supernatural bounty hunter comes after her, he realizing she is human decides to protect her instead. Darien can’t wrap his head around who or why they would want her, but he’s going to do everything in his power to keep her safe. Will they be able to get the answers they want and keep Loren from whoever wants her?

This is the first book in the House of Devils series. Loren may not have any powers, but she is loyal and kind, doing all she can for those she holds close to her heart. Darien deals with his own demons both figuratively and actually, but then he meets Loren and there is something about her that he must protect. The miss communication between the two at times made me want to scream. But the two of them together are a great fit. Also the fact that we get both his and her perspectives throughout the book lets you get an inside look into what they are thinking. This world is dark and gritty. It is urban fantasy but it’s own world as well. I enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read the next book, City of Smoke and Brimstone.
